CBD Not THC

Cannabidiol, otherwise referred to as CBD, is a chemical compound found in the cannabis Sativa plant. The version of CBD most commonly used across the United States comes from hemp, which is defined by the CDC “as any part of the cannabis sativa plant with no more than 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).” Hemp, although being a close relative to marijuana plants that contain THC (the mind altering chemical in marijuana), is federally legal and considered safe for consumption. Because CBD can be found in marijuana plants containing THC it is often written off by people as dangerous or as being a contributing factor to the “high” that you feel from consuming THC. The reality behind CBD is much more nuanced and complex than “good or bad.”
The History of CBD
Cannabis has been used for its medicinal properties for centuries all around the world. Originating from Central Asia, one of the first ways in which cannabis was utilized was to create textiles which were produced specifically from hemp. Cannabidiol was first extracted from cannabis in 1940 by Roger Adams, a chemist from Harvard University. CBD now comes in many different forms: oils, tinctures, creams, lotions, and even pills. Today in the U.S., CBD can be found in all cannabis plants, although federally it is only considered legal if it comes from hemp thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill.
The Science of CBD
On the scientific spectrum, CBD has been said to help treat insomnia, anxiety, inflammation and even epilepsy. In fact, the first ever FDA approved cannabis-derived medicine, Epidiolex, is effective in alleviating the most intense forms of epilepsy experienced by children. In certain cases, children stopped experiencing seizures altogether. Large clinical trials of CBD have yet to be widely performed therefore there is still much to be seen in terms of its effectiveness in helping treat other illnesses. Currently it is being studied to see its effectiveness in treating anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, and chronic pain caused by inflammation, arthritis, or nerve damage, and that’s just to name a few.
